Build Your Own Dial

You can replace the builtin modes on the Dial, low, medium, high, and ultra, with your own selection of two to four modes, builtin or from plugins, in the order you want. Your dial replaces the standard one, and you turn through your modes in the mode picker in the web app and the Mac app.

Build Your Own Dial is experimental. To turn it on, go to Personal Settings → Advanced → Experimental Features and enable Custom Mode Dial. The editor then appears under Settings → Mode Dial.

Build Your Dial

The list on the right shows everything you can put on the dial: the four builtin modes and every agent mode your plugins add, from personal, workspace, and official plugins.

  • Drag a mode onto a slot, or click it to add it to the next free slot.
  • Drag modes on the dial to reorder them, or select one and use the arrow keys.
  • Remove a mode to free its slot. A dial holds two to four modes.
  • Presets fill the dial in one click. A preset only appears when you have all of its modes.
  • Hold the save button to save the dial. Revert discards your changes and returns to the saved dial.

Copy link copies a share URL. The URL contains the modes themselves, so it never expires. When someone opens it, the modes load in their editor as an unsaved draft, and modes they do not have are dropped.

Example Dials

Hover over a dial to see the mode behind each position, and click to turn it.

All Subscription
With a ChatGPT subscription linked, every mode bills to it.
Medium Builtin
The default for most work. Fills in the steps you left out.
Open Source Only
Four open-weight models, light to heavy.
Official plugin
A capable daily driver for everyday coding tasks.
Grok + ChatGPT
Grok on the ends, your subscription in the middle.
Medium Builtin
The default for most work. Fills in the steps you left out.

All three are presets in the editor. Apply one with a click, then adjust it.

Personal and Workspace Dials

Workspace admins can set a dial for the whole workspace under Workspace Settings → Dial. Every member gets it by default. A personal dial always overrides the workspace dial.

Plugin Modes on the Dial

Any agent mode from a plugin can go on the dial. Plugin modes run the model they declare, whether or not you have a ChatGPT subscription linked. Subscription routing applies only to the builtin low, medium, and high. A model your subscription covers bills to the subscription. Any other model runs on Amp credits.

If a mode on your dial disappears, e.g., because the plugin is uninstalled or the mode is renamed, the dial skips that position and the rest keeps working. If fewer than two of your modes are still available, you get the standard dial until you fix your dial in the editor.
